Day 2
We entered the narrow channel of College Fjord in the early morning hours. Bob decided to sleep in, mumbling something about, “if you have seen one glacier, you have seen them all”. I have to admit that after 37+ years, he has seen his share, but I did not want to miss seeing Harvard Glacier. I bundled up and was on deck at 6:45 AM to see a beautiful moon over the mountains and within minutes, see the sun rise over Harvard Glacier, 61 degrees North.
I recalled that the Harriman Expedition had named several of the icebergs after Ivy League colleges in 1899. We saw a few ring seals on the ice flows and some calving of ice into the sea but nothing too spectacular. After two hours, we left the Fjord and make our way along Prince William Sound pass Bligh Reef. After rounding Cape Hinchinbrook, we entered the Gulf of Alaska, heading southeast to Cape Spencer, heading toward Glacier National Park and Preserve. We relaxed and read, enjoyed the hot tub, and a good work-out before dressing for dinner. We could have done without the formal night, but I guess it doesn’t hurt to dress up, now and then. After dinner, we heard an entertaining comedian, Kevin Jordan. We laughed for 2 hours, but were glad that we were not sitting to close to the front where he constantly picked on people. We then danced to the music of a good band playing 60’s music. The female sax player was impressive. Bob agrees, but I am referring to her musical ability! It’s 12 midnight and the end of another great day.
