Days 12-16

We arrived at our friends, Cam and Flora Solari’s beautiful home overlooking Reno. Bob and Cam have a lot in common, both receiving kidneys from two incredibly, special young women who are also friends, Cammie and Randi. On Thursday while our long-range diesel tank was being installed in Carson City, Cam and Flora took us to Virginia City. This is a famous, old silver mining town with a fascinating history with many of the original buildings still standing.

On Friday morning, we packed a picnic lunch and drove to Lake Tahoe to their lovely condo on the lake. Surrounded by huge pines, the crystal clear lake was a picture-perfect postcard, as we had always imagined it to be.

I had to have a giant pinecone as a souvenir and of course some white rocks from the beach for my daughter-in-law, Holly.

After a relaxing picnic, we drove to Squaw Valley, famous for the winter Olympics, and stopped at the resort.

The Reno/Lake Tahoe area is definitely a place that we would like to spend more time exploring. That evening, Cam and Flora took us to Johnny’s, their favorite Italian restaurant. What a treat! Saturday and Sunday, we went to the 46th Annual National Championship Air Races and Air Show, one of the things on Bob’s “bucket list”.

The races consist of different classes of aircraft racing around a 6-8 mile oval with pylons on the ground as markers.

As you can imagine, this makes for an exciting race with wingtip to wingtip racing at over 500 MPH.

There were aerobatic performances interspersed with a fantastic airshow by the Blue Angels.

On Sunday evening, we went out to a Mexican restaurant sitting on the patio enjoying the warm evening. Flora and Cam call this fall but the 88-91 degrees days seemed like very hot, summer days to these two Alaskans. We can’t thank these two wonderful friends enough for their gracious hospitality. Sometimes in life, paths cross and in 5 minutes you feel closer to someone than to others that you have known for your whole life.

Cam and Flora opened their home and hearts to us and we will always treasure their friendship.
